Middle English & Old English; Middle English heretogh, from Old English heretoga; akin to Old Frisian hertoga leader of an army, duke, Old Saxon heritogo, Old High German herizoho, herizogo, Old Norse hertogi; all from a prehistoric Germanic compound whose constituents are akin respectively to Old English here army and to Old English togian to draw, drag, and that is probably a translation of Greek stratēlatēs leader of an army
